The U.S. Constitution guarantees that any person accused of a crime that could result in jail has a right to effective legal representation at every critical stage of the court proceeding. Persons who cannot afford to hire a lawyer may ask the judge to appoint a public defense lawyer to represent them. The Washington State Office of Public Defense does not provide legal advice or directly represent clients in legal proceedings. All public defender services are provided to clients by local county and city programs. The following counties and cities provide local public defender agencies to represent adults and juveniles who are accused of a crime and cannot afford to pay a lawyer. These agencies may be reached at the phone numbers listed. To find public defense help in a county or city not listed below, contact the court in which the charges are filed.
